On Sunday, we started part 4 of our series, ‘A Beautiful Mess’, looking at the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. We started looking at 1 Corinthians back in April 2016 and have returned to it every year since. We are doing it in parts to allow us to look deeply into 1 Corinthians, whilst not spending a whole year in the same book of the bible.
We realise that not everyone now at Emmanuel was around when we first started this series. During part 1 of the series, we saw the importance of unity and how only Christ and His work can bring about such unity.
Part 2 of our series affirmed the value of the gathered church community and our bodies; we looked at the importance of celebrating both singleness and marriage, prioritising our call to follow Jesus.
In part 3 we considered how God’s love for us should shape our attitudes and freedom.
Now in part 4, we will learn lots about when we gather together to worship. Looking at the key areas of the Lord’s Supper and Spiritual gifts. In it all we would perhaps do well to remember the key message of chapter 13: Love is supreme over all spiritual gifts as it will last forever. ‘So faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.’
