Sue Brockes-Smith Deaconship Appointment

13/11/22

What an amazing moment in time for us at Emmanuel Church! It is a new season, we have an unmarked map in front of us and are being invited to put our own markings on the map, using the ancient paths laid down in the bible to guide us.  The bible clearly conveys that God's heart is towards the poor, the oppressed, the voiceless and the lonely, in fact all who are struggling, and he invites us to be part of the solution in caring for people and pursuing justice.  It is wonderful to see the ways this has already been  happening through the CAP Life Skills Course, fostering, supporting refugees, asylum seekers and those who have experienced modern slavery. The Christmas hampers to support people experiencing debt and those with mental health struggles has been beautiful!

It is my delight to accept the new role in leading this work at Emmanuel, in order that we might have greater impact and influence in conveying the love of God to our local communities.  You blew me away with your commendations and kind words, I was stunned!  Thank you for the great privilege, freedom and permission you have given me, I hope and pray I will do it justice!

As many of you know, I co-founded the Anti Slavery Initiative Oxford (ASIOX) and lead the day to day operations.  We are delighted to have been accepted in The Big Give Christmas Campaign which runs 29 November to 6 December.  This provides us with the opportunity to triple any donations we receive!  I would love to invite you to consider making a donation which will be used for our next Befriender Programme, to be launched in the spring. This programme provides individuals who have experienced modern slavery with an extra layer of support through friendship, helping them reintegrate into the community.   If you love to steward your finances well and maximise your giving, this is a great opportunity and a great cause.  Look out for this campaign on social media or on our website www.asiox.org

Thank you, I look forward to this journey together!
